Get Organized for the Holidays – Make a Spending Budget

Times are tough for many of us so the first step in getting organized for the holidays is to decide what you can honestly afford to spend this year.  Write your dollar figure at the top of your list.

Below your budgeted amount, write down all your usual holiday expenses. These may include things such as:

 -extra groceries for holiday meals

- entertainment

-decorations

-travel

-gift purchases

-wrapping paper and cards

Add any other expenses you might incur.

Next, assign a dollar figure to each expense on your list.   Be sure that the total does not exceed the dollar amount at the top of your page.

Use this list as your spending guide for the holiday season — if you stay within your budget, you’ll be able to start the new year without holiday debt.

Many years ago my husband and I purchased savings bonds through payroll deduction, and the bonds would come in right around the time we would start Christmas shopping. We didn’t earn any interest because we cashed them right away, but it provided us with a forced savings plan and spread out the expenses over the year.
